Mud Season in Colorado: Activities to Enjoy Between Seasons

Mud season in Colorado is a period of in-between, when winter sports have mostly ended and summer activities are just beginning. This transitional period between late April and early June is characterized by melting snow (increasing mud!) and unpredictable weather. Despite the muddy trails, mud season is often a favorite time of year for many Rocky Mountain locals because there are fewer crowds and more opportunities to explore the region in a different way.

  1. Embrace the Reset
If you’ve ever experienced the transition from a busy winter ski and snowboard season into mud season, you know the shift into reset mode. While you transition between sports and activities you love, consider integrating yoga and mindfulness into your routine. This is a great way to be present in the mud season moment, without trying to rush ahead to summer.

  2. Hit the Trails: Hiking, Trail Running and Mountain Biking
While a lot of trails will be closed or unpassable until later in the season, lower elevation terrain is great to explore during mud season. You’ll experience plenty of high-country beauty without battling summer crowds. With cooler temperatures, mud season hikes, runs and rides can be more comfortable than adventures taken in peak summer. As in any season, stay on designated trails and be prepared with appropriate clothing and provisions.

  3. Hit the Pavement: Cycling
If the “mud” in mud season is giving you pause about getting on the trails, mud season is a great time to get back in the road-bike saddle. There’s less traffic on the roads and paved bike paths, making the transition back to the road more accessible.

  4. Soak Up Some Hot Springs
Did you know Colorado is known nationwide for its major hot springs? Mud season is the perfect time to explore these pools and springs—many hot springs offer discounted off-season rates and you’ll enjoy less crowded soaks!

  5. Go Fishin’
Early mud season is a great time to get to the rivers before the water gets too murky from the mountain run-off. If you’re new to the sport, be sure to consult a guide to make sure you have appropriate clothing and gear.

  6. Explore New Communities—or Enjoy a Staycation
Locals to mountain communities know that mud season can be a great opportunity to score a discount at hotels and restaurants. Use mud season as an opportunity to adventure to a new town for a weekend getaway, or stay close to home and enjoy hotel amenities. While many restaurants will offer mud season deals, others use the slower season as an opportunity to close until summer. Be sure to check that businesses are open during mud season before venturing out!
Mud season in Colorado may not be as well known as winter and summer, but it’s a unique opportunity to explore the state. From early season fly fishing and hiking to hot springs and staycations, there are plenty of activities to enjoy in this in-between season.
